Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. It is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the toes. The plantar fascia supports the arch of the foot and helps to absorb shock when walking and running.
Symptoms
The most common symptom of plantar fasciitis is heel pain, which is often worse in the morning or after prolonged periods of standing or sitting. The pain may also be worse when you first get up from bed or when you climb stairs.
Other symptoms of plantar fasciitis may include:
Stiffness in the heel or foot, especially in the morning
A stabbing or burning pain in the heel
Swelling in the heel
Tenderness to the touch in the heel or foot
Causes
Plantar fasciitis is caused by overuse or stress on the plantar fascia. This can happen due to a number of factors, including:
Overweight or obesity: Excess weight puts extra stress on the plantar fascia. Activities that put stress on the feet: This includes running, jumping, and dancing. Wearing shoes with poor support: Shoes with a high heel or poor arch support can put extra stress on the plantar fascia.
Having flat feet or high arches: People with flat feet or high arches are more likely to develop plantar fasciitis. Sudden changes in activity: Suddenly increasing the amount of time you spend on your feet can put extra stress on the plantar fascia.
As your patient walks across the GaitScan™ plate, 4096 sensors are set to scan the plantar surface of the foot in motion. The GaitScan™ system records timing sequences during gait and captures the relative pressure for each of ten distinct anatomical landmarks. The result is the detection of imbalances and other indicators of common lower limb pathologies.
GaitScan™ gives you the ability to view a patient’s plantar pressure distribution in both 2D and 3D. The synchronized mode allows for a direct right and left foot comparison and displays the centre of pressure or "gait line" of the foot throughout the gait cycle. Detailed images allow for the easy identification of high pressure areas and existing biomechanical inefficiencies.
Dr Fern uses The GaitScan™ system featuring TOG Client Software is an innovative diagnostic tool and digital casting device that allows practitioners to analyze patient biomechanics and order custom orthotics. With 4096 sensors and a scan rate of 300Hz (frames per second), GaitScan™ is the industry leader in dynamic scanning capability
With both diagnostic and educational capabilities, GaitScan™ provides a comprehensive biomechanical evaluation for each patient. In-depth, informative reports give you access to over a million data points which break down deviations from optimal biomechanics and assist you in effectively diagnosing and prescribing orthotic solutions for your patients.
